Areas of Expertise

Able to draw upon more than 40 years experience in environmental management, municipal and industrial water and effluent treatment consultancy, ARL are able to offer a broad range of technical and commercial services to their clients which can be summarised as follows:

Municipal wastewater & industrial effluent treatment process design

  • Physico chemical treatment
  • Aerobic biological treatment
  • Anaerobic biological treatment
  • Nutrient removal
  • Wet Air Oxidation
  • Odour modelling and remediation

Potable water Treatment Process Design

  • Screening
  • Chemical Addition/Flash Mixing
  • Sand Filtration
  • Pulsed bed
  • Rapid Gravity
  • Moving Bed
  • Membrane Technologies
  • Chemical Oxidation
  • Disinfection
  • Chlorination
  • Ozonation

The above design capabilities, in both wastewater and potable water, have been applied to a number of municipal and industrial clients for on site treatment plants, together with modifications and extensions to existing municipal works and leachate treatment design for landfill operators. We are able to undertake full-scale design contracts or detailed feasibility studies which evaluate technical process options with the associated capital and operating costs to achieve consent/legislation compliance.

Process water treatment design

  • Reverse Osmosis / UF Technology
  • Demineralisation / Dealkalisation technology
  • Thermal and membrane desalination
  • Evaluation of alternative water source

Waste minimisation – Product re-use and recycling
ARL look to establish best practice for the site as a whole, rather than concentrating on ‘end of pipe’ solutions. Water needs to be considered as a raw material in its own right which leads to the use of treated effluent as a low or high grade process water, depending on the technical requirements and the cost of treatment compared with raw water costs.

HAZOP studies / Risk Assessments
ARL can act in the role of chairman of HAZOP groups, or as contributor of technical input. Health and Safety and COSHH regulations require substantial input at the design stage. We are also experienced at undertaking Hazardous Area classification and zoning according to the national area classification code BS5345 (subsequently amended to EN6001).

Commissioning and operational support
ARL provide manpower and / or operational advice during the critical commissioning stage of any new treatment process. This can lead to the rapid adoption of a “turn key” project by company operational personnel. ARL Consulting can maintain involvement at any level required to ensure the ongoing efficient, cost-effective operation of the process, this can range from occasional reviews of operational data to more regular service visits and proactive involvement in plant operations.

Project / Contract Management (IChemE Green & Red Book)
ARL can offer project management services either as a stand-alone service or as part of a design/build or consultancy contract. These services can be tailored to meet the needs of individual clients and budgets.

Training services
ARL Consulting are experienced in providing training packages focused on the exact needs and technical level as required by the client. Simon Binyon is an experienced lecturer with the Water Training International group as well as a number of UK Universities where he lectures to PhD and MSc postgraduate courses on advanced water and effluent treatment processes.

Legal/expert witness advice
ARL can provide senior staff with “expert” knowledge in key areas. Simon Binyon is an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and has extensive experience of working alongside specialist law firms concentrating on environmental issues and contaminated land / land remediation law.

Full CAD facilities (P&IDs, PFDs, GAs) are available.
ARL is equipped with the latest computer aided design facilities to facilitate rapid generation of all drawings “in house”. Trained to AutoCAD R14.
